スティーブストンに行ってきました
気晴らしにスティーブストンに行ってきました。目的は日本人が昔住んでいた漁港を見ることでした。そこにはむかし小さな日本人コミュニティーがあり村上音吉という方がそこに昔住まれていたそうです。現在は無料の資料館のようになっており、村上さんが昔住んでいた家が再現されていました。ボランティアで管理していただいている方がおられ、日本人と知ってお話をしてくださいましたが、残念ながら50-60%しかわかりませんでした。本当に悔しい。差別にあいながらもたくましく生き、長い目でみれば我々の道を切り開いてくださった方々、そしてそれを守ってくださる現地の方々に感謝しつつ、今後も頑張りたいと思いました。
I went to Stevenson to take a break. Today’s purpose was to see a fishing harbor where some Japanese fisher lived a long time ago. There was a small Japanese community and Otokichi Murakami also lived there. There is a museum in the fishing harbor now and the house Murakami lived in has been rebuilt there. I saw a man who manages the museum as a volunteer. He told me a lot of stories about the fishing harbor because I told him I am Japanese. However, I got sad because I could catch only a half of his story. Murakami faced a severe discrimination, but lived energetic. I have to appreciate people who started to live there and who protect this history.
